Bismarck, ND (KEYZ) A bill that would allow the use of a one penny sales tax to pay off school expansion bonds, cleared another hurdle in the North Dakota state legislature Thursday. By a highly favorable vote of 11 to 3, the bill passed out of the Political Subdivision Committee paving the way for a floor vote in the House sometime next week.

If passed into law, school districts would go before their city commissions and ask for the sales tax to be put on the ballot; should city commissioners agree, the sales tax request would then go to the voters.  The penny sales tax is not unprecedented in Williston; the city funded construction of the ARC and the fire house using the same formula.

The bill, authored by Williston District One Representative Patrick Hattlestad, is considered promising as it provides the necessary funding for schools to get built while granting some relief to property tax payers.
