Based out of Minneapolis, the low-cost leisure carrier will begin offering nonstop flights to Las Vegas beginning September 2, 2021. Sun Country Airlines will offer twice weekly service to Las Vegas McCarran International Airport (LAS), operating on Thursdays and Sundays. With fares as low as $79 one way, the airline is "really, truly offering very affordable fares to a leisure destination. It's something we've been working towards forever," said Dudas.

Dudas also thanked Williston city leadership Tuesday for making XWA's partnership with Sun Country possible and for their "amazing foresight" in building a new airport to accommodate leisure travel aboard larger aircraft.

Williston Mayor Howard Klug also took to the dais to recognize the next evolution in the life of XWA.

“This is the opportunity we promised to people here in northwest North Dakota. When we had our vision of XWA, we not only promised better air service for business travelers, but we also expanded opportunities for the leisure traveler. By working with Sun Country, we have kept our promise and we hope for expanded destinations in the future.”

City Commissioner Chris Brostuen, who oversees the city's airport portfolio, spoke to the regional aspect of XWA and the fulfillment of "a vision and a dream for the city and the airport staff to bring a low-cost carrier to the community and give the residents and people of the region an opportunity to fly out of Williston versus driving to Minot or Bismarck or even further away."

Brostuen also thanked Airport Director Anthony Dudas profusely for staying the course to supply the region with a leisure air carrier despite getting a lot of "no's" from a variety of airlines along the way.

Dudas told the crowd in attendance Tuesday that he's "very confident" that once this initial partnership with Sun Country Airlines proves successful, additional services to the community will continue moving forward.

This new route is on sale now at suncountry.com.
